| In 2004 Lower Hutt City
introduced the nursery grade to its junior programme. Around
fifty kids aged six and under took part in weekly games on two
specially marked out pitches with miniature goals, nets and
corner flags. They were all sorted into club teams from
Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Inter Milan,
Barcelona, Juventus, Arsenal and Valencia and issued with the
appropriate kit. Each team took part in a twelve-minute game
with no results or points tables and the emphasis on
participation. It was a really casual affair with parents
allowed on the pitch to encourage the shy kids and a lot of fun
was had by all. Ages ranged from six down to twenty-one months
and kids from as far as Upper Hutt and Wainuiomata came to play.
